The Surrounding of the Lindenhof
‘Why travel far away? See the Good is so near!’
(Goethe)
Discover the beauties of the area in long and leisurely walks or even short strolls. Stop and linger at the many spots which give great views of the city.
Wander along the 20km Goethe Path or even try the 25km- long walk called ‘from Goethe to Bach’ – they are just 2 of countless possibilities.
Just outside Ilmenau lies the “Kickelhahn’, Ilmenau’s mountain. At 861 metres above sea-level, it gives fabulous views of the Thueringen countryside and so is well worth the climb. You can of course drive or cycle up there.
Goethe’s little refuge, the ‘Goethehäuschen’, is at the top beside the tower. What used to be a lodge became the place at whose walls Goethe sat when writing. In 1870, Goethe wrote his ‘Wanderers Nachtlied’ – ‘Peace covers all the mountains tops’. As true today as it was then.
When you’ve visited the Kickelhahn, you might also want to try riding around the area- ride the Ilm cycles paths and discover the other beauties of the lovely Thueringen countryside.
The cities of Arnstadt, Erfurt, Weimar, Rudolstadt, Meiningen and Schmalkalden, are very close by and apart from wonderful things to see, offer a uniquely rich and diverse cultural experience.
